Setting up a Degrowth Summer School UK website

Hi Jon! Thanks for the message and following up with us.
Indeed, the screen has disappeared, I didn’t register and don’t think anyone else has, but trying to find out to be certain. Is there any chance that it could expire?
We should have another call sometime soon, likely this week, and will try to make some decisions about the website then. Again, you’re welcome to join us if you’d like! In any case, we’ll keep you posted

That’s great! Thank you @mark.burton! We’re actually planning on starting promoting the summer school relatively soon to fuel interest before the launch of the call. We’ll be in touch then.

I think many people in our group have already joined the email list, and it probably can be another channel to spread the word.

Thanks,
Oxana

Hey @Oxana, I have reverted that site to its original state, and would like you to reclaim it soon’ish. It’s readily waiting for at

https://uksummerschool.degrowth.net/ghost/

Please let me know about this call, and I will check if I can participate.

Hey @yala thanks a lot for the reply! Jonathan registered on the platform, we’ll discuss during the call if it’s all working and how to go about access to the website. The call is scheduled for this Saturday 4 pm London time. Jitsi link is the same https://meet.jit.si/Degrowthsummerschool-DIGITAL. If you can, please join us!

Hi @Oxana I will try to be there, but cannot make a promise on the weekend. Will we continue to keep notes in https://board.net/p/UK_degrowth_summer_school_-_DIGITAL ?

I’m really interested to know the opinions of @jbusch and other WordPress developers about developing for the Ghost platform. In my view, it makes a lot of sense for simple sites to try Ghost, but it’s upon you to tell about its simplicity and usefulness, both from an end user and designer perspective.

Hey @yala, yes we can use the same pad. If you don’t manage to join, I’ll send you an update after the call. Thanks for your help!

Hi @yala. I’m not really a Wordpress developer, and I also don’t have a lot of time to customise anything so I was really hoping for a theme that we could use without too many alterations.

We’ve had a look through some ghost themes, and they seem more suited to a blog style site than an events page. How difficult would it be for you to set us up with a Wordpress backend instead of Ghost?

Hi @jbusch thanks for your investigations. I see that the site’s design has been altered. Indeed Ghost is more suited for simple and text-focussed content styles. Is it a specific feature, that you are missing?

From the experiments on the page I cannot depict, if you would like static content pages, for example. I’m can always provide counsel here, if you need suggestions for how to move forward. Ghost is quite a straightforward environment, why we can provide it donation based.

In case this kind of voluntary support is not suitable, a WordPress website would always be available from an Ecobytes membership. You could register here http://ecobytes.net/membership-form, and we could continue setting up a WordPress environment.

Hi @yala. I have wordpress hosting somewhere else already (greengeeks) for a couple of sites that I manage - it might be easiest if I just add this as a site there. Would it be ok to redirect the uksummerschool.degrowth.net domain to there?

We could do that, yes. Which A or preferably CNAME record would you like for this to be set?

And did the group also have a look at https://pretalx.com/ and evaluate it for the Call for Contributions? I’d still be interested to try it out with the UK summer school.

Hi @yala. Could you point a CNAME record to uksummerschool.postgrowtheconomics.org please?

I’ve had a look at pretalx, but we haven’t discussed it in the group yet. My feeling is that it’s probably a bit too much for what we need, since we’ll only have about 30 participants. What do you think?

This is now both valid for uk.summerschool.degrowth.net plus uksummerschool.degrowth.net.

For me this is the ideal case to test a new platform. The user community will be well known, and we can offer a direct feedback channel here.

Building up a collective archive of entries might not be the worst idea in the first place, plus being able to schedule the sessions depending on the abstract’s accepted.

Eventually a summer school turns out to be too less of a conference-style format to be represented in such an environment, but I’d rather guess the generel submission and review workflow already helps the editors a lot.

Such a computational experiment can come with an overhead, in case it gets terminated with an undesired outcome, such as the blog one, but I am willing to accept the chance and test drive something very appealing to me.

Another group recently found the Liebling theme, and I like what it produces, even when applied roughly.

Also the ticketing platform tickets.degrowth.net remains available as part of the computational commons.

Hey @yala! We’re still exploring our options… Will it be possible to connect uksummerschool.degrowth.net to a website created based on wix? Thank you

I’m not really sure what you are up to  , but yes, that shall be possible.

Why wouldn’t you want to go with WordPress anymore?

Because Jonathan is pretty busy now, and Inés and I are looking for options that we can manage on our own and without coding.

Would it be possible to connect wix to the domain now?

If you’re available now, we would be very happy to have your advice on this! We’re having a call here https://meet.jit.si/BlueWormsAnticipatePatiently.

@yala Hey Jon! It’s me again. Could you please give us access to uksummerschool.degrowth.net for us to connect wix to it? We’d like to have our website running by early next week, as we really need it for funding applications. We can also buy a domain via wix, but since you already created one, it would be great to use it. Please let me know! Thanks!

Best @Oxana, please pardon me the absence from this channel lately; life.

I can add the configuration to connect the domain to Wix, but will need to know where to. In their How To article about this subject, the specific information about A and CNAME resource records is left out. Could you please provide me with what is written there for you, after signing in?

@yala Hey Jon! Thanks a lot for getting back to me!
We’d created another domain just one day before you replied, so we are here now https://www.ukdegrowthsummerschool.org/. Not yet to be shared widely though, we need to make some corrections and make sure we can guarantee what we’re promising there… If you have any comments/suggestions about the website, please let me know. Many thanks for your help!!
